WINDOW STICKERS FOR SALE
Tuesday, August 17, 2010
-
In a fund raising effort, Greenwood Fire Department is selling all three current department patches as window stickers for vehicles or what have you.

The Circle Patch, is the current patch that adorns all apparatus along with being worn on all class B work uniforms.

The Gumby Patch, is the department mascot patch worn by some on their turnout gear. ( How Gumby, came to be the department mascot is somewhat of a story I have heard many variations of, involving a fire college weekend somewhere in the United States, with the early hell raisers of the department. As anyone from that time knows this group was notorious and the stories I'm sure don't rival the event itself )

The Class A Patch, " AKA " ( Pregnant Lady Patch ) is the patch worn on all Class A uniform Jackets.

ALL patch window stickers are currently available for you to purchase at a cost of only $ 3.00 per sticker. All proceeds go to the Fire department.

USE THE CONTACT US. SECTION OF THE WEBSITE TO OBTAIN A WINDOW STICKER TODAY !!!!!

Thanks to Thorton Graphics.

MOOSIC MAYOR & FIRE DEPARTMENT MEMBER JOHN SEGILIA PASSES AWAY

Friday, August 13, 2010
-
UPDATED ******AUGUST 16, 2010 Moosic Mayor John Segila was laid to rest today after a wonderful tribute. Click onto the WNEP TV link below marked MOOSIC MAYOR TRIBUTE for the video story. Thank you to our Emergency Service Partners: Old Forge Fire Department, Duryea Fire Department, Taylor Fire Department & Scranton Fire Department for their unselfish help with providing our part of the tribute.

Long time Moosic Mayor and Greenwood Fire Department member John Segilia Sr. passed away this week. Mayor Segilia, 76, died on Wednesday at home after a sudden illness. He shared 54 years of marriage with his loving wife, Loretta.
Born and educated in Hazleton, he was the son of the late Thomas and Mary Segilia. He faithfully served his country during the Korean War. John was an employee of AT&T for more than 30 years. He was a parishioner of Divine Mercy parish, formally St. Joseph's, in the Minooka section of Scranton, and lived in Moosic borough for 49 years.
John was best defined by his love of family and his tireless service to the people of Moosic. As a member of council and mayor, spanning 29 years, he led the fight against the state's decision to build a penitentiary on Montage Mountain in the 1970s. He also successfully opposed a proposal by a Virginia-based Hare Krishna sect to purchase Rocky Glen Park. John was supportive and played an integral role in the residential and commercial development of Montage Mountain during his public service tenure. The borough of Moosic named a park after Mayor Segilia and his longtime friend and political ally, Joseph Mercatili, in 1999. In 2002, he was named "Mayor of the Year" by the Pennsylvania State Association of Mayors and, in 2006, he received the same honor from the Pennsylvania Association of Boroughs. Mayor Segilia was a member of American Legion Post 604, a longtime member and director of the Greenwood Hose Company, a past board member of the Lackawanna County Planning Commission and Lackawanna County Council on Sports and Recreation and director and member of the Moosic Youth Center.
He was very proud of his presidency and being named "Man of the Year" by the Italian-American Democratic Association. Countless politicians on local and state levels sought his political support and counsel.
Also surviving are four children, Joanne and husband, John Jackowicz; Marie and husband, Bryan Fauver; John and wife, Marie; and James and wife, Colleen; nine grandchildren, Ashley, Bryan, Justine and John Fauver and Jessica, Danielle, James, John and Jeffrey Segilia; and two brothers, Tom, Hazelton, and Joseph, Howells, N.J.
A brother, James, also preceded him in death.
The funeral will be Monday at 10 a.m. from the Semian Funeral Home, 704 Union St., Taylor, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11 in Divine Mercy Parish, 312 Davis St., Scranton, to be celebrated by the Rev. Francis Pauselli, pastor. Interment with military honors will be in Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary Cemetery, Minooka.
Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. American Legion Post 604, Moosic, will conduct services at 5.
Visit semiancares.com to share memories or extend condolences.
In this photo from 1976 Mayor Segilia is pictured during the acceptance of the Fire Departments 1976 Dodge Mini Pumper.

RESCUE TOOL UPGRADES

Friday, July 30, 2010

Rescue 98 has switched to Dewalt  36 volt cordless tools. The switch was made to obtain new battery technology and longer run time. We will publish the current Milwaukee Tools and Robo Battery pack for sale in the near future.

WET WATER?

Friday, July 30, 2010
-
Brush 98 will be utilizing a little chemical technology to enhance extinguishing capability. When the Brush unit was being spec'd out, members gave serious consideration to include a Class A Foam system to enhance extinguishing capabilities due to the limited water carrying capability. Due to the cost and maintenance matters, it was decided to by-pass the Foam system and search for other possibilities. With the recent receipt of a DCNR Grant, we are now utilizing DRENCH. Drench is a water additive that considerably decreases the surface tension of water, thus allowing deeper and quicker penetration to the seat of the fire. There are no special application needs or procedures. According to statistics, performance of the 250 gallons of water should nearly double.

GREENWOOD FIRE OBTAINS DCNR GRANT

Wednesday, June 23, 2010
-
Greenwood Fire Officials were notified that a recent Grant Application submitted to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources was approved. The funding is marked to provide several new additions to the Departments Brush Vehicle and will also be utilized to upgrade a portion of the Departments communication system. The upgrades provided by this Grant and the recent apparatus rework will certainly help the Moosic Community. Moosic was recently classified by the State of Pennsylvania as being a target hazard Community in regard to Wildland Fires. Government data that dates back a few years coupled with this springs large brush fire which was located in "Scranton" but in the Montage Mountain area helped label the community with this status. Fire Department Officers in conjunction with local DCNR officials have reviewed this classification and are satisfied with the Fire Departments response characteristics and equipment upgrades.

UPDATED 6-25-10  WE'RE ALL FIXED UP AND BACK TO NORMAL... SUPER SECRET GARAGE DOOR LASAR BEAMS ON THE WAY SO THAT THIS EVENT DOESN'T REPEAT ITSELF...... GUESS WE SHOULD HAVE PRUCHASED THEM ONE OF THE OTHER 15 TIMES THE GARAGE DOORS HIT THE APPARATUS. LIVE AND LEARN....

And you think it's easy being a Fire Department...... Well, it ain't so..... After chasing and battling a traffic grid lock that overtook the Lower Valley looking for a Interstate crash that was not at the location as reported, Rescue 98 under the Command of Captain Chris Cichocki and Chauffeured by Bitty Bill Sweeney, returned to quarters.... While entering the garage a malfunctioning garage door transmitter caused the door to come down on top of the rescue vehicle.  There was no damage to the Rescue, however, we can't report the same for the Garage Door nor the ego's of the Chauffeur or Captain....Thanks to the 911 caller that provided the incorrect mile marker location... You were only 3 miles off with your location....No one was hurt in the mishap and we are hopeful that the same played out at the real location of the Interstate crash which was in a Luzerne County response district.... We all need a little humor to break the ice....it's all we on our side.........LOL.....
